Overview
The Institute for Leadership and Management ( ILM) Level 5 Certificate in Effective Coaching and Mentoring programme is designed to develop the coaching and mentoring skills of practising managers and professionals.
The course combines theory, practice and evaluation to empower professionals with the knowledge, skills and confidence to introduce coaching and mentoring into the workplace and to perform effectively as management coaches.
ILM’s coaching and mentoring qualifications improve management performance, conflict resolution and communication and interpersonal skills.

Entry requirements
This course has no formal entry requirements, but it is recommended that those who apply have an undergraduate or post graduate qualification in business, leadership, management, human resource management, psychology or a vocational qualification, such as an ILM level 5 certificate in leadership and management or a Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) qualification.
The course is also suitable for individuals with no formal qualification in management or leadership, but several years' experience, with some formal training in their role.

Who is this course for?
The ILM Level 5 Certificate in Effective Coaching and Mentoring programme is aimed at individuals who undertake coaching or mentoring in their workplace or who wish to develop coaching and or mentoring within their organisation.
For example, the course is suitable for managers with significant responsibility for effective coaching and mentoring as part of their daily role, aspirational or early career freelance coaches or mentors as well as individuals aspiring to take up coaching or mentoring as part of their role.

What does this course cover?
The ILM Level 5 Certificate in Effective Coaching and Mentoring course is a comprehensive programme that provides in-depth coverage of the following topics:
- Principles and practices of coaching and mentoring, which defines what coaching and mentoring are and the key competencies of each, as well as measuring the impact of coaching or mentoring.
- The framework for coaching and mentoring, including coaching or mentoring plans, the “coaching contract” and managing resources.
- The coaching or mentoring contract in practice, which covers programme design and commitment to its upkeep.
- Effective and ethical management coaching and mentoring, addressing trust, ethics, diversity matters, learning styles and preferences and communication methods.
- Reflective practice, which covers learning from feedback on coaching and mentoring practice.
- Self-appraisal, which looks at the spectrum of coaching and mentoring, strengths and weaknesses, emotional intelligence and support networks.
- The contribution of management coaching and mentoring, which addresses meeting the client’s learning and development needs and evaluating effectiveness.
- Reviewing the coaching or mentoring relationship, which covers working with management clients and the development journey, professional networks and peer mentoring.

What will participants achieve?
On successful completion of this course participants will be awarded the internationally recognised ILM QCF Level 5 Certificate in Effective Coaching and Mentoring.
Participants will be able to effectively coach and mentor others within an organisational context. This will include self-assessment of own capabilities as a coach or mentor, managing the coaching or mentoring process, and understand how context affects the coaching or mentoring relationship.
Participants will also be able to plan, deliver and review coaching or mentoring and plan their own future development as a coach or mentor. It will also enable participants to practice as an effective coach or mentor in an organisational context, working with people in middle management and leadership positions.

Who teaches this course?
The programme is delivered and assessed by a team of experienced coaches from the Academy of Leadership and Management.
The team has considerable experience of working as independent coaches and mentors with many years’ experience.

How will this course be taught?
The course is a mixture of online and face-to-face learning.
Participants will attend weekly workshops organised into groups of three, with delegates playing the role of coach, coachee and observer.
Participants will also access online course materials and will be expected to complete assessments.

How much time will this course take up?
Participants will attend one 3 hour workshop per week for the duration of 23 weeks.
In addition, participants will also be expected to devote between two and five hours a week on assignments and 18 hours of coaching or mentoring, with two or three volunteers, who participants will identify.

How is this course assessed?
Participants will need to undertake assessments to complete the course, all of which are specified by ILM and each with a practical focus so that they can be applied in the workplace.
There are four assessments: development of content for a coaching or mentoring guidance manual, a proposal for delivery of a coaching or mentoring programme, development or material for a procedures manual for delivery of a coaching or mentoring programme and a personal evaluation and development of a personal development plan.
The assignments are submitted through the virtual learning platform, where the learning materials are housed, and are marked by experienced coaches and mentors who hold assessment qualifications. -
Accreditations
Individuals who complete this course will be awarded the internationally recognised ILM Level 5 Certificate in Effective Coaching and Mentoring.
