The FatMax test is a physiological assessment designed to determine the substrate utilisation during exercise. Rates of energy expended (calories burned) and the fuel substrates used (carbohydrates and fats) are measured during exercise.  The results are valuable for those who are interested in optimising fat metabolism during exercise, such as individuals engaged in endurance training or those seeking to improve body composition. The results can help identify exercise training zones at which an individual burns the maximum amount of fat as a percentage of total energy expenditure.

Please note: You will be required to attend the assessment in a ~4 hour (no food, water only) fasted state. In most cases, however, we recommend an 8–12 hour fast provides the most accurate and standardised RMR measurement, minimizing external metabolic influences. Therefore, you may wish to book a morning appointment, following an overnight fast.

• The time required for this assessment is approximately 60-minutes including pretesting preparation and testing time.
• This test is not a maximal exercise test; Exercise will be performed on a treadmill or cycle ergometer and involve progressive increases in intensity over time according to the client’s individual fitness level.
• Gas exchange responses will be measured using breath-by-breath analysis during exercise to measure oxygen uptake and other relevant physiological measures of intensity.
• Assessment of whole-body and segmental body composition using bio-electric impedance analysis*.
• Personalised report providing information on your energy expenditure at rest and during exercise will be provided by e-mail.
• *Please note: Bio-electrical impedance analysis technology which is not suitable for people with an electronic medical implant, such as a pacemaker, and pregnant individuals.

We will meet you at the reception area of our K2 building where our HPC clinic is located.
