The Reverberation Chamber is designed to enhance sound reflections. It features hard, reflective internal boundaries that promote sound reverberation, making it ideal for studying how materials absorb sound and for measuring the sound power levels of large machines. This chamber provides a controlled environment where sound waves continuously reflect, creating an acoustic setting similar to that of a large, old church.
The chamber is built with hard, reflective surfaces designed to maximize sound reflections. Unlike the Anechoic Chamber, it does not absorb sound but instead enhances reverberation. It features adjustable boundary absorption, allowing researchers to control the level of reflectivity. With a large usable space, the chamber can accommodate heavy machinery, up to 400kg, making it suitable for industrial sound power measurements.
The Reverberation Chamber is ideal for testing how different materials absorb sound, making it valuable for product development in industries such as construction and automotive design. It is also used for measuring the sound power levels of large machines following British Standards. Additionally, the chamber has unconventional applications in the creative industry. For example, international designer Anne Kyyro Quinn used the chamber to test the acoustic properties of an artistic panel, which was later showcased at the New York Design Show and even featured in Ridley Scott’s film Prometheus. This facility offers a unique testing environment for both technical research and creative innovation.
Our facilities are uniquely positioned in Central London and are therefore highly accessible for industry connections.
Our Reverberation Chamber is located on our Southwark Campus.
