The Anechoic Chamber is a highly specialized acoustic facility designed to eliminate sound reflections and block external noise, creating an almost completely silent environment. The name "anechoic" means echo-free, and this chamber achieves near-perfect quiet conditions, making it an essential tool for precise acoustic testing.
The chamber features heavy concrete walls and large sound-proof doors to prevent external noise interference. The 70cm-long acoustic foam wedges on the walls, ceiling, and floor absorb sound reflections, ensuring a completely echo-free space. The suspended metal grille floor allows for equipment testing while preventing unwanted surface reflections. Additionally, the entire chamber is mounted on springs to minimize vibrations from external sources, such as underground trains, ensuring high accuracy in sound measurements.
The Anechoic Chamber is ideal for a range of applications, including precise sound power measurements, frequency response testing, and professional audio recordings. Industries such as manufacturing and engineering use the chamber to measure the noise output of machinery like refrigeration systems, heat exchangers, and fans. The Royal College of Music has also used the chamber to record high-fidelity audience applause, helping students improve their on-stage performance.
Our facilities are uniquely positioned in Central London and are therefore highly accessible for industry connections.
Our Anechoic Chamber is located on our Southwark Campus.
All our facilities are available for external hire. For information, please email facilitieshire@lsbu.ac.uk.
