The CPCAB Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills Intensive at LSBU provides a fast-track route to acquiring fundamental counselling techniques and knowledge in just three weeks. Whether you aim to become a professional counsellor or wish to enhance your communication and interpersonal skills, this course equips you with the ability to use counselling skills ethically and effectively across various roles.
Counselling skills are valuable in a range of professions, including health and social care, education, youth work, HR, advocacy, and customer service. This intensive course provides a structured, immersive learning experience, allowing you to gain a nationally recognised qualification in a shorter timeframe compared to traditional courses.
No formal qualifications are required. However, a keen interest in counselling, good communication skills, and the ability to self-reflect are recommended.
The course covers a wide range of counselling and communication skills, including: • Using counselling skills ethically and safely. • Establishing and maintaining boundaries in a helping role. • Working empathically to support others. • Focusing on the helpee’s needs and concerns. • Enhancing self-awareness in helping work. • Applying a range of counselling skills to facilitate interaction. • Using feedback and reflection to develop skills.

Participants will receive a Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills from the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB).
By completing this course, participants will:
• Develop essential listening and communication skills for professional and personal use. • Gain self-awareness and emotional intelligence to work effectively in a helping role. • Learn how to create ethical, safe, and professional boundaries in counselling interactions. • Enhance their career prospects in healthcare, social work, education, and other people-focused professions. • Build a strong foundation for further counselling training, including Level 3 and Level 4 qualifications.
This course is delivered experienced counselling professionals in the psychology department at LSBU.
The course is a mixture of lecture, experiential activities and workshops, skills practices and group work. You will work closely with your cohort and be supported through the experiential process by the teaching staff.
This course is taught over 3 weeks, according to the following schedule:

Additional sessions • Online support sessions
Participants will be assessed through: • A portfolio of evidence demonstrating achievement of learning outcomes. • A short external ‘open-book’ exam, completed remotely.
This course is accredited by the Counselling & Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB). LSBU is an approved provider of their courses.
