This intensive hands-on two-day Introduction to Diagnostic Musculoskeletal Ultrasonography course is designed for health care and medical professionals with no or limited experience in Diagnostic MSK Ultrasound.
This highly practical course aims to enhance practitioners’ understanding of the theoretical principles and applications of Diagnostic MSK Ultrasound and awareness of the normal and pathological findings identified through the use of ultrasound.
This course will take a blended approach to learning. It will provide a range of learning formats and teaching delivery styles and allow an individual approach, providing participants with some flexibility in their preferred learning style. Hence, the course comprises a mixture of lectures, demonstrations, case studies, and practical workshops. The practical workshops take place in small groups with close supervision from our expert tutors.
The course includes scanning techniques and protocols of all peripheral joints including short lectures on basic physics, image optimisation, anatomy shorts lectures ensuring participants are all familiar with the anatomy for each region we cover, normal appearance of the anatomical tissues and structures in ultrasound, overview of pathology case studies, as well as clinical governance issues and regulation.
The Introduction to Diagnostic Musculoskeletal Ultrasonography course takes place in LSBU's Croydon Campus.
As part of our course, you are advised to take notes and photos where appropriate for your own learning. At registration, you will also receive a free copy of our MSK Ultrasound practical guide for clinicians, comprising more than 60 illustrations and figures on normal appearance of anatomical structures on ultrasound, probe handling and therapist-patient position for future reference and clinical practice.
Applicants must meet the following criteria: • Degree in a relevant healthcare subject or equivalent overseas professional qualification • Current registration with the relevant UK regulatory/professional body (e.g. GMC, GOC, HCPC, GCC, BASRaT, SST, NMC) or equivalent overseas regulatory/professional body

By the end of this two-day course, you will be able to: • Describe the fundamental principles and concepts of ultrasound • Understand the normal appearance of common musculoskeletal tissues in ultrasound • Demonstrate an effective examination of the main peripheral joints using ultrasound • Identify and compare-contrast normal and common pathological findings identified through the use of ultrasound • Evaluate the role of ultrasound within your professional practice
Stavros is a Senior Lecturer and Course Director for the Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert) in Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Imaging, in the School of Allied and Community Health.
Alongside academia, he works as a Band 7 MSK Sonographer in the radiology department at Queen’s Hospital BHRUT NHS Trust.
Stavros serves as Deputy Editor at Ultrasound Journal of the British Medical Ultrasound Society (BMUS), Accreditor at the Consortium for the Accreditation of Sonographic Education (CASE), External Examiner for the MSc Radiography and BSc/MSc Medical Ultrasound courses at Birmingham City University (BCU), Reviewer for The Ultrasound Journal of the World Interactive Network Focused on Critical Ultrasound (WINFOCUS), Treasurer for the Greek Athletic Therapy Association (GATA), and Committee Chair in the Research and Education Committee of the World Federation of Athletic Therapy (WFATT).
The two-day Introduction to Diagnostic Musculoskeletal Ultrasonography course is delivered face-to-face and it takes place in LSBU's Croydon Campus.
Participants will be encouraged to develop as autonomous and resourceful learners.
This course runs face-to-face over two days, on a weekend, from 9:00 to 17:00 each day at London South Bank University.
Short breaks and a lunch break will be implemented on each day of this two-day course.
Please note that the Introduction to Diagnostic Musculoskeletal Ultrasonography course provides practical knowledge but do not award a certificate of competency. You must enquire with your relevant professional/regulatory body to confirm if the skills covered within our course are considered within the scope of your professional practice, and whether your professional insurance will cover you to use them in your practice.
The course is endorsed by the College of Radiographers (CoR).
