Introduction to SPELL is a one-day course that explores a practical, values-based framework for understanding and supporting autistic individuals. Developed by experts and autistic practitioners, the SPELL framework - Structure, Positive approaches, Empathy, Low arousal, and Links - provides a clear foundation for creating inclusive, respectful, and effective environments. 

Delivered in partnership with AT-Autism, the course supports professionals across sectors in embedding strengths-based, person-centred practices into their work.

This course covers:

• Origins and values of the SPELL framework 
• The five core SPELL domains: 
  • Structure 
  • Positive approaches and expectations 
  • Empathy 
  • Low arousal 
  • Links (connection & collaboration) 
• Person-centred, strengths-based support 
• Applying SPELL to your professional setting 
• Identifying and addressing contextual barriers 
• Links to frameworks such as Universal Design

This course will be taught through interactive, dialogic sessions combining: 

• Mini lectures 
• Case studies 
• Group discussions 
• Reflective activities 
• Practical application tasks tailored to participants’ contexts 

The course is delivered by licensed trainers from LSBU and AT-Autism, including professionals and autistic practitioners with both lived experience and subject expertise. 

This course is ideal for: 

• Education professionals (e.g. teachers, SENCOs, support staff) 
• Health and social care practitioners 
• Mental health professionals 
• Employers and HR teams 
• Justice sector professionals 
• Anyone supporting autistic individuals in a professional capacity 

By the end of the course, participants will: 

• Understand the principles and values underpinning SPELL 
• Apply SPELL strategies confidently and appropriately 
• Support autistic individuals with empathy and effectiveness 
• Enhance inclusivity and accessibility in their workplace 
• Receive a certificate of participation (CPD-recognised)

There is no formal assessment. Active engagement and reflective participation are encouraged throughout. 

This course is UKCPD accredited and participants will receive a certificate of participation upon completion.
